Sony prepares PSP firmware 4.00 with Google Search
PSP firmware 4.00 is giving the portable Google search, with stored memory for the 20 last searches. And video played off a memory stick can be sped up or slowed down. Funny how such a monumental firmware digit stands for such minor upgrades, but we’re happy to see improved functionality by software any day, in any device.
While the upcoming 4.00 firmware update for Sony’s PSP isn’t the sea change we’d expect from a .00 software release, it certainly adds an attractive feature to the mix. The handheld gaming device will now be endowed with a native Google Search client, allowing you to search the web to your heart’s content, storing up to 20 searches in your device’s history in the process. Great, but what about, you know, more features? The addition of Google Search is certainly appealing, but with something as momentous as firmware version 4.0 hitting the table, we’d sort of expect a bit more excitement. This is still relegated to the rumor pile, so we suppose Sony might have a bit more up their sleeves for the official release, but until we hear anything to the contrary we’ll remain just a bit disappointed.

I kinda wish I had a PSP-2000. My 1000 is realy starting to show its age with the new games that came out since the new model and its RAM boost. The nifty features the newer PSP comes with are also a plus.
Still, new firmware is always good news. I just wish Sony would finally use WebKit as a base for its Playstation browsers, if for no better reason than to show that they’re serious about enhancing “the mobile entertainment experience on PSP system.”

Let me preface by saying I use my psp daily. Seriously I do. No Really. That being said, I had the thing for about 3 days before I had loaded up a custom firmware courtesy of Dark Alex. Another week before I bought an 8 gig memory card for it. Without those two thigns, it would still be gathering dust on my friend’s desk (I bought it off of him for about 30 bucks, shows how much it was being used). I have about 5 games on it and about 30 homebrew apps that I use all the time. I use it to check weather and read comics, and even game from time to time.
What I want to know though, is why doesn’t Sony just acknoledge this? How great would it be for a 4.0 release for Sony to encourage homebrew development on the PSP? I bet you that 90 percent of the poeple that use a psp, outside of Japan, only use it for homebrew, and there’s a good reason for that! The thing has so much potential, and it is being squandered by Sony. If you have a psp, and haven’t unlocked it yet, stop what you’red oing, go out, and do it. Right now.
