The BlackBerry Storm might have its faults, but I’ll give RIM one thing: they’re certainly cranking out these firmware updates at breakneck speed. Of course, no matter how fast they get the updates out, people will get impatient – which is why it’s always good news when a leak like this one occurs.
Sometime last night, OS 4.7.0.90 for the BlackBerry 9500 and 9530 (the GSM and CDMA versions of the Storm) found its way out of the code-crankin’ labs and onto the internets. A number of folks have already put their Storms into the petri dish for the sake of science, returning with positive results; initial reports claim an overall snappier UI (faster transitions and accelerometer detection), and an option to enable a full QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode. Remember, however, that this is a leaked (and presumably beta) version of the OS, so it doesn’t come without a fault or two – a few bugs are purportedly still lingering, including one that makes the camera a bit finicky about saving photos properly.

iPhone bring soon Bluetooth File Transfer

Aside from lacking flash support, the iPhone doesn’t also do Bluetooth filetransfer. Well, thanks again to jailbreak and the hardworking developers out there, this sorely missing feature may soon be available on the iPhone as developer MeDevil is currently working on one. The video above shows its potential, and once it’s done and ready, it’ll be available as part of the iSpazio repo. PMPToday guess its apps like these that make jailbreaking totally indispensable. Great work guys, keep them coming!

Good news for all of the Fido BlackBerry wannabes out there. As expected and just like we told you last week, Fido did indeed begin training its employees for the arrival of BlackBerry with a targeted launch date of February 4. Sadly it looks like Fido really is going to start things off with the Pearl 8100, but at least it’s going to allow people to BYOBB. Well, unofficially at least.
The 8100 will go for $400 month-to-month/off contract, $350 on a 2-year, and $25 on a 3-year with voice and data. As for the data plans to be offered, they are as follows:
$15 – Unlimited personal email and IM
$25 – 500MB
$30 – 1GB
$60 – 3GB

Obama possess an BlackBerry for personal use

Yes, we can! Maybe all the hootin’ and hollerin’ about Barack’s quandary regarding the status of his BlackBerry actually ended up helping the President keep the addictive device. For personal use only, Mr. Obama’s BlackBerry will still be in commission, though we do hope he opts to upgrade to a Bold or 8900, at least (give us a call Mr. President, we’ll hook you up)! It will make it more worthwhile since he will be forced to use an awkward and clunky-looking Sectera Edge, which has been approved by the NSA for official use, as a business device. As if this news wasn’t the best free advertising anyone can get, the folks at RIM must be bursting with glee. While we’re all familiar with the device that has been like an appendage for Obama, you might be interested in taking a peek at the Sectera Edge, so hit the jump for an image and details!
Verizon Wireless cut prices from select handsets and EV-DO modems

Verizon Wireless customers in the market for a new phone may want to wait a bit before bringing home the latest and greatest Verizon has to offer. We have it on good authority that Verizon will be discounting a handful of handsets and a few broadband access modems, possibly as soon as January 22nd. This would be an unusual out of cycle discount as the current rebate sheet continues until January 31st. Select hardware from Verizon Wireless, LG, Casio, Motorola, Samsung and RIM will supposedly see their mail-in rebates increased from $50 to $70. Sure the out of pocket expense is the same but a $20 discount is a $20 discount even if it comes in the form of a rebate check. With the current state of the economy, we’ll take any discount we can get. Hit the jump for a full list of discounted hardware according to our ninja.

With Quicker SMS you can send SMS from your PC

Last week we mentioned SMSLink which lets you send text messages from your PC or Mac over Bluetooth. Turns out there is another game in town called Quicker SMS. From what I can gather Quicker SMS is PC only and works over your USB connection instead of Bluetooth. It has some cool features that I thought were interesting like giving you access to your BlackBerry address book. It is going for $9.95 on the developers website at this link.

Key features from the description:
Send SMS to many friends from your address book by one click.
Send timed SMS to friends in the future.
Show new SMS notification dialog on PC desktop from your BlackBerry phone when it connects with Quicker SMS(OS 4.1 only).
