There are only a few days until the opening of Mobile World Congress 2010 trade fair (15 to 18 February, Barcelona) – the largest event dedicated to mobile telephony and communications. This year, Global Mobile Awards ceremony (the equivalent of the Oscars, but in mobile communications), we find among others that is in the opinion of specialists the best phone released in 2009. Category has five nominees that we present below.

Blackberry Bold 9700

Redoubtable smartphone is receiving a processor clocked at 624 MHz, 256 MB RAM and OS BlackBerry OS 5.0. On the connectivity offers a complete support, consisting of HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 A2DP. Auxiliary branches are the integrated GPS receiver (plus maps BlackBerry Maps) and 3.15 MP camera with autofocus. BlackBerry Bold 9700 ensures a quick handling, thanks to full-QWERTY keyboard and optical touchpad navigation.

The screen measures 2.44 inches and has a resolution of 480 x 360 pixels, thereby overcoming the main competitor of the business category – the Nokia E72. Moreover, E72 is lower and in terms of speed (128 MB RAM, Bold 9700 comes with 256 MB). Sure, the Symbian operating system is more popular and there are many applications for it, so a significant proportion of users would opt for Finnish smartphone instead of Canadian. Therefore, our alternative proposal is the Nokia E72. I believe it can be used more efficiently in terms of software.

Samsung S5230 Star

Can hardly be explained by the presence of this terminal in the list of nominations. As it were dozens of models from different manufacturers and specifications are disappointing: resistive touch screen (there are similar models but with screen capacitance), Lisp 3G/HSDPA and Wi-Fi connections, missing GPS module. Neither the multimedia highlights not too much: 3.15 MP camera without autofocus, QVGA @ 15 fps video recording and Sony’s proprietary interface for connecting headphones.

The SunEPhones proposal is LG GT505, a phone accessible and well equipped. Or at least the version with Wi-Fi’s Samsung S5230 (S5230W).

HTC Hero

Taiwanezii focus on the production of smart phones entered the game with the Samsung Hero terminal that I had the pleasure to test it last year. We will not go into details here, those who want to know more about it can read your review “Samsung Hero – we needed such a hero. And we’ve included the list of nominations – is a perfect phone, but certainly very good.

Huawei U8220 (T-Mobile Pulse)

To be honest, I have not heard of this terminal before now – not because I had something with Huawei, but the phone was released exclusively in T-Mobile network. Name of alternative is T-Mobile Pulse. In terms of specifications, can be compared to the Samsung Hero: Does Android platform, 3.5 inch capacitive screen and 320 x 480 pixels, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3.15 MP camera. Price is its great advantage, especially for Americans who opt for a contract with T-Mobile.

Without careful to physical and moral integrity of the specialists at MWC, I mean that would be right to nominate phones available worldwide and free of contract. No other but it is clear that there are many alternatives which are more interesting. An example of the same class as Samsung i5700 Galaxy.

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD

Omnia HD is only HD recorders smartphone launched in 2009. But this device has much more to offer – essentially one of those gadgets that is close to ideal. What is missing? Hard to say. Maybe QWERTY keyboard – a minor detail if we refer to offering this multimedia monster-business: capacitive AMOLED screen of 3.7 inches (360 x 640 pixels), 8 / 16 GB internal storage + microSD slot (supports cards up to 32GB) , 8 MP camera, video and GPS 720p @ 24 fps.

Samsung Omnia HD platform based on Symbian OS v9.4 Series 60 rel 5 (optimized for the touchscreen), a Cortex A8 processor at 600 MHz and 256 MB RAM. Does anyone have the courage to propose to replace iPhone 3GS? I for one I would keep doing that.

Finally, I have to say and my prognosis related to who comes out the winner – Samsung Omnia HD. Do not rely too much on it, because the jury is very strange tastes. I remember the previous gala was successful INQ1 phone, selected from a list of difficult names like Nokia E71, HTC Dream or the BlackBerry Storm 9500.

I believe that designating these awards should include the future and a section dedicated to the public – the people to nominate and vote of phones.
